BSCNA Breeding Regulations

June 10, 2021

V. 1.0

Our goal is to protect and advance the current standard of the breed as approved by the Klub Přátel Chodského Psa (KPCHP) and adopted by the FCI (Federation Cynologique Internationale) as the only standard of excellence by which the Bohemian shepherd shall be judged. The club will do all possible to safeguard and improve the health of the Bohemian. We collected data from the European clubs and have adopted similar regulations for breeding as used by these clubs.

These rules are to help ensure that pups are born as healthy as possible and also to maintain genetic variety for the future well-being of the breed. Below, we will first mention the requirements that your dog or bitch must meet, then details on how to proceed.

For our breed, the opportunity to have litters even one time is incredibly important. Bohemian shepherds  have an extremely small population here. It is our hope that everyone who loves this breed will join in the commitment of working together to help each other learn about the breed and breeding and maintain and protect them in a positive and encouraging manner. Here in North America, we wish to concentrate on genetic diversity instead of multiple litters by one line. The survival of our beautiful breed depends on the occasional breeders, people who have a litter once purely as a hobby or put their dog on the stud list. The world of dogs is constantly changing and we are all here to learn together and support each other in doing our best to maintain genetic diversity and secure the future of this wonderful breed.

BSCNA Forms: These are a work in progress at this time.  Please contact us to discuss.

  • BSCNA Temperament Evaluation Form

  • BSCNA Health Evaluation Form

  • BSCNA Exterior Evaluation Form

  • BSCNA Breeding Request  Form

Exterior Evaluation: Currently with our low and scattered population we are not planning any BSCNA showing events. Thus, please fill out the Exterior Evaluation form and send in pictures and videos according to the following:

  • Picture of standing side view

  • Picture of sitting front view

  • Picture of standing rear view

  • Video of dog trotting on your left side counter clockwise in a circle

  • Video of dog trotting away from the camera

  • Video of dog trotting toward the camera

*Please take pictures and videos on a flat surface such as concrete or asphalt.

**BSCNA is hoping that in the future we can host events every two years with European judges in order to obtain a qualified evaluation. We want these events to be fun and informative and will complete the physical and personality evaluations of dogs.

Bite/Teeth: Must have a scissors bite to breed. Must have full dentition (42 teeth). If your dog is missing teeth please send a veterinarian written/signed notice for BSCNA to review stating which teeth are missing and reasoning as to why teeth may be missing.

Testicles: Male must have both testicles descended naturally in order to breed.

FCI Breed Standard: Please read the FCI breed standard for the Bohemian shepherd (Chodsky Pes) and use this to help you evaluate your dog and understand faults in the breed.

Hip evaluations: Hip evaluations at a minimum age of 24 months with either OFA and/or Pennhip.

  • For OFA results: Excellent, Good and Fair grades may breed. However, Fair hip dogs must breed with Excellent or Good hip dogs.

  • For PennHIP: Currently results are compared to results of all the breeds in their system. Once we have 20 dogs in their system we will have a much better understanding of the hip results for our breed and can then devise better rules on choosing mates to improve hip results. Until that time we recommend that if you choose PennHIP then please consider also having an OFA evaluation for hips at the same time as you do the PennHIP evaluation.

Elbow evaluations: Elbow evaluation with OFA at a minimum age of 24 months. Normal and Grade 1 may breed. However, Grade 1 must breed with a Normal resulting dog. Elbow evaluation can be done at the same time as hip evaluation.

Embark DNA: We would like everyone to do an Embark Breeders test on their dogs(s) even if you have no intention of breeding. These tests are essential for learning health trends and to hopefully discover the markers for Bohemian shepherd specific diseases not yet known. It will also provide Degenerative Myelopathy results which will help us start tracking this disease within the breed. The test can also provide parent/offspring verification. Also one interesting piece of information will be the actual COI of your dog, based on the chromosome level analysis. In addition, once Embark has collected enough data and there are enough intact dogs of our breed in their database then we hope to be added to their Matchmaker feature. This will be a very helpful tool for breeding. Until then Embark provides a free service of figuring the potential health, trait and COI outcome of a mating.

When purchasing the test, Embark will ask you to create an account and profile for each dog. Be sure to use your dog’s registered name and upload your dog’s pedigree. It is recommended to use a veterinarian to confirm your dog’s identity, complete the swab, seal it in the prepaid envelope and mail it off for you. You can also ask your veterinarian to add a note at the bottom of the Vet Verification form that the sample was mailed by the veterinarian. Then email a copy of the form to BSCNA.

The Embark results are sent to you alone. It is beneficial to the breed if you make your dog’s results public on the Embark site. This can be done in the profile you make. In addition, please send a copy of the report to BSCNA. To send the copy open your dog’s profile, scroll to the bottom where it says Print or Download Results. Right click your mouse on the words “Full Report”, then select download from the menu and send that download to bscnainfo@gmail.com.

To buy an Embark Breeders test

Embark Veterinary Verification form

Degenerative Myelopathy:

Based on your dog’s results from the Embark DNA test. Normal/Clear, Carrier and “At Risk” dogs may breed.  However, Carrier and “At Risk” dogs must breed with a Normal/Clear dog.

Locus D: Based on your dog’s results from the Embark DNA test, dogs affected with the greyish coat (d/d) may not breed. Carriers (D/d) must breed with Normal/Clear (D/D) dogs.

Coefficient of inbreeding: The COI from Embark is a much more accurate COI than using the pedigree based COI. As we get more results with Embark we will be better able to determine the range of COI in our population and breed accordingly based on Embark recommendations for the breed.

AKC Canine Good Citizen and CKC Canine Good Neighbor: BSCNA only needs to see the form which states your dog’s registered name and that the dog has passed the test. You are not required to pay for a certificate or title in order to breed.

AKC DNA Parentage Test: AKC DNA Profiling is required for: Frequently Used Sires (dogs having the greatest impact on the AKC Stud Book); imported breeding stock; dogs whose semen is collected for fresh-extended or frozen use; and for the sires, dam and puppies for Multiple-Sired Litter Registration. All imported dogs must complete this test. In addition, dogs born in the U.S. but living in Canada must also do this test.  This is an AKC requirement. If using artificial insemination for breeding it is best to order the AKC DNA test and bring the test to your reproduction vet to complete. The litter registration form has a section on the form which allows the veterinarian to check a box saying they did the swab.

Information on AKC DNA

To buy an AKC DNA test: $50.

FCPR Registration:

FCPR, the Federación canófila de Puerto Rico, allows us to use our European Registration to register with them. This allows the resulting puppies from a mating to have a real registration instead of only a recording number with AKC.

To register your dog with FCPR:

($115)

You must mail in form with Original Export Pedigree - cannot mail in a copy. They stamp the original and send it back.

Tip: Copy Export pedigree before sending original so you have a copy on hand and it is best to pay for a priority return envelope for FCPR to use to send back your Export Pedigree - it is worth the extra cost).

Epilepsy:  Dogs diagnosed with epilepsy must not breed. If your dog is having seizures not due to epilepsy please have your veterinarian write the diagnosis and treatment for seizures and send it to BSCNA for review.

Age and Litter Restrictions: Female and male must be a minimum of 24 months and in good health at the time of breeding. The female may not be bred after the day she reaches 96 months (8 years) of age. The female may not be older than 60 months of age at the time of her first breeding. For breeding males over 9 years of age submit a veterinary approval to breed. For the purpose of genetic diversity in the breed and because our population at this time is so low any male or female may have no more than 3 litters or 18 puppies, whichever comes first. As more dogs are imported, hopefully increasing our diversity this number will change.

Repeat Breedings: For the purpose of genetic diversity and because of low population there should be no repeat breedings of the same male/female combination. If you feel there is a need for a repeat breeding please contact BSCNA to discuss.

AKC FSS Requirements for Using a Stud Dog who resides in a country other than the U.S.

  • Stud dog must register with FCPR

  • Stud dog must register with AKC FSS

  • Stud dog must complete an AKC DNA test

  • Stud dog must have passing hip exam for their country and follow the rules for breeding

       based on result

  • Stud dog owner must comply with AKC and FCPR rules and forms for Artificial Insemination.

BSCNA Litter Regulations

Litter Checklist for owner of dam:

  • Register litter and each individual puppy with new owners name with FCPR

  • Record litter and each individual puppy with new owners name with AKC FSS

  • Embark Breeders DNA test for each puppy

  • Microchip each puppy

  • Complete the BSCNA “Record a Litter” form

Formal name of each puppy must be the same for AKC FSS and FCPR.

Details for Litter Regulations

Limited Registration: In order to encourage breeding practices devised to preserve and promote the Bohemian shepherd breed in North America it is required to do a Limited Registration on litters for AKC FSS and FCPR. For AKC FSS the Limited box will be checked in registering each puppy. For FCPR simply write Limited Registration on the registration form for each individual puppy. Once owners complete all requirements to breed the owner of the litter may change the registration from limited to full.

Learn more about Limited Registration

Registering the litter with AKC FSS: Choose the correct litter registration form based on the type of breeding.   When using Artificial Insemination have the owner of the stud print out the correct AKC FSS Litter Registration and complete their portion. The stud owner will take the form to their reproduction veterinarian to sign and the form should be mailed along with the semen to the veterinary reproduction center chosen by the owner of the female.  Here their portion of the form will be filled in and signed. Once the litter is born then the rest of the form may be filled in and sent to AKC. Once the litter is registered, AKC FSS will send the owner of the dam forms to fill in for each individual puppy as each puppy transfers to their new owner. The cost to register each puppy with their new owner is $10 per puppy with AKC FSS.

Registering a litter with FCPR: FCPR has one litter registration form. FCPR requests the microchip number for each pup but those will not be inserted until the puppies are 6 weeks, so ask your vet if they will “set aside” the chips for later insertion and give you the numbers. If not, you can order your own chips from AKC reunite.com. The third option is to explain to the FCPR that those numbers will come later but that the registration takes so long, that you would like to proceed with just the names of the pups and sex for now.

Litter Registration with Puerto Rico FCI (FCPR): $20 per puppy under 3 months age. If older then rate increases.

See FCPR rate card

After registering the litter FCPR will send forms to be filled in for the final transfer of each puppy to their new owner. The breeder must turn in these registrations and not leave it up to the new owners. The new owner registration is $35 per puppy. In addition, request a pedigree for each pup. The cost for a pedigree is $50 per puppy with FCPR and can only be done after the puppy transfer to new owners is complete.

Embark Breeders DNA test: Puppies need to be Embark tested and results back before the pups go to their new homes. You can identify puppies by using their collar color.

Embark Litter Package tests

(1-3 pups $109 each/ 4-12 pups $99 each).

Before your pups go off to their new homes you need to add their microchip numbers to their Embark profiles and then share and/or transfer ownership to the new owner:

To add a shared owner or to transfer ownership:

  1. Sign in to your Embark account and click on the dog's profile

  2. Click on the Edit Profile link.

  3. On the Edit Profile page, scroll to the bottom where it says “Ownership.”

  4. Click Edit next to “Primary and Shared Ownership.”

    1. To Add a Shared Owner: Under Add a Shared Owner, enter the email address of the new shared owner.

      1. You can also select additional access options:

        1. Can answer surveys

        2. Name appears on reports

        3. Has full control

    2. To Transfer Ownership: Under Transfer Ownership, enter the email address of the new owner.

      1. You can also choose to be a shared owner.

  5. Click Add or Transfer in the respective section

Please note: The person who you are adding as a Shared Owner or Transferring Ownership must first create an account.

Age restrictions for litters: Puppies should not leave their mother until a minimum of 8 weeks of age.  However, we encourage owners to keep puppies longer. It is understood that some people will be flying their puppies in cabin and that puppies older than 8 weeks may be outside the weight allowance of the airline.  Those puppies that are being shipped via cargo or being picked up by car should be older than 8 weeks to leave.
